Organizers of Saturday’s outdoor ice cream social in downtown Stillwater say the event is on – regardless of frigid temperatures.

The Washington County Historical Society will host an ice cream social from noon to 4 p.m. at Lowell Park Gazebo. The expected high is 9, with wind chills as low as -12.
“It’s never too cold to have ice cream, and there will be even fewer mosquitos than last year,” said Brent Peterson, executive director of the Historical Society, who came up with the idea in 2009 after discovering some photographs of winter ice cream socials in the 1950s — an idea of businessman Gilbert “Gib” Larson.
One year the wind chill was “well below -30, but the sun was bright in the sky,” he said. “We also had one year that it rained. That was awful.”
A number of area businesses are helping with the event. Ice cream, cones and chili will be provided by Leo’s Grill & Malt Shop; coffee will be from The Daily Grind Espresso Cafe; and root beer from Lift Bridge Brewery. Ice cream and drinks will be free; there will be a charge for the chili.
