I applied through the Office of Career Services at JGLS.

The application process is similar regardless of whether you apply through your university or through Veritas’ website. You will be required to fill an application form with the following details:
- Your name, contact details and photograph
- College name, year of study and area of interest
- Covering Letter and Resume
- Preferred month of Internship
You will be selected for an internship based on your Resume and Covering Letter.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the internship was held virtually. On the first day, we had a zoom induction meeting where the HR team introduced us to our fellow interns and familiarised us with the trajectory of our internship. We were given a brief introduction to the firm and informed of the procedures that interns needed to follow during their internship.
Veritas has a Buddy system for online internships wherein all interns are assigned an Associate, Senior Associate and Partner who act as their buddies for the duration of their internship. The interns can approach their buddies for work and guidance. Every week, a buddies meeting is held where the buddies discuss the intern’s progress and suggest improvements, if any.
The intern can also pose questions to the buddies about any concerns they might have. These regular update sessions help the interns get valuable feedback about their work and allows them to learn from their buddies’ experience. The buddies are also very helpful and kind towards the interns, meeting with them regularly (albeit online) removes the impersonal and mechanical aspect that most online internships suffer from.
During the last week of the Internship, interns are required to prepare a presentation on a topic assigned by their buddies. This presentation should include a discussion and critical analysis of the topic assigned. The buddies are open to discussing your topic and its intricacies beforehand to help you engage with the topic.
Type of Work Assigned
During the induction meeting, the HR team asks each intern about their area of interest. As my area of interest was Competition Law, the HR team made sure that I worked closely with the Competition Law team during my internship. Apart from Competition law, I worked on various areas of law such as Banking and Finance, Mergers & Acquisitions, Corporate Law, Employment Law and Litigation. I was assigned four types of work across these subjects:
- Due Diligence
- Case law and legal research
- Proofread and summarise documents
Internship Timings and Workload
The reporting time for the internship was 10 a.m. and the working days were Monday to Friday (and the first Saturday of every month). While the workload can be heavy, the associates will only assign you work if you are available.
If you have prior commitments, the associates are very flexible and accommodating and will not overburden you with work. However, I suggest you get as much work experience as possible because you can learn a lot from the associates who take the time out to explain the finer points of the purpose and process of any work they assign you.
- Quality of work: I got the opportunity to work on many major matters across various subjects of law. I was allowed to draft documents with the guidance of associates and work on due diligence reports which helped me understand the practical application of law. Additionally, the four-week internship allowed me to work on some matters from the beginning which gave me an idea of how matters progress and the stages of review conducted.
- People: Everyone I worked with was very helpful and willing to provide guidance throughout my internship. The HR team was also very approachable and accommodating.
Due to the virtual mode of internship at Veritas Legal, my interactions with the team (besides the buddies) were limited and there was no interaction with other interns. However, the Buddies meetings were very effective in removing the impersonality of a virtual work environment.
Who Should Apply and Why
This internship at Veritas Legal is ideal for 3rd to 5th year law students. As this is an assessment internship, the work assigned is intensive and provides a very rich learning opportunity for students to understand the practical functioning and application of law.
However, it is very hard to get a Pre-Placement Offer (“PPO”) at the end of the internship as your performance is closely evaluated at every step of the process. Thus, I suggest you approach your work assignments and final presentation with a lot of hard work and dedication while constructively applying the feedback you receive from the associates.
Nevertheless, the work experience you will gain from this internship is extremely valuable to improve your skills as a corporate lawyer and understand the role of an associate at a corporate law firm.
