The White Bear Lake officer shot Tuesday night while trying to arrest a man on a felony warrant has been identified as Ryan Sheak, a six-year veteran of the police department.

Sheak, who was shot three times, remained hospitalized in stable condition Friday, Police Chief Julie Swanson said in a statement.

“We would like to thank the White Bear Lake community and our citizens for the outpouring of support they have shown our department over the course of this past week,” she said.

Sheak was raised in White Bear Lake, graduated from White Bear Lake High School and lives in the metro area with his family. He has “established a solid reputation of excellence” as a patrol officer, DARE officer and training officer, Swanson said. He is a crisis negotiator with the Ramsey County sheriff’s office SWAT team.

The alleged shooter — 33-year-old Daniel Loren Holmgren Jr. — was charged Thursday with first-degree attempted murder of a peace officer, first-degree assault-dangerous weapon and three counts of first-degree assault-use of deadly force against a peace officer.

Holmgren made his first appearance on the charges Friday in Ramsey County District Court. Judge Paul Yang set his bail at $3 million; he remained jailed.

Yang also ordered that Holmgren undergo a Rule 20.01 evaluation, which is used to determine whether a defendant is capable of communicating with a defense attorney and competent to participate in criminal proceedings.

According to court records, Holmgren has a history of mental illness, civil commitments and threats of violence toward his mother, police officers and others. He’s been diagnosed as having bipolar disorder with symptoms of mania, antisocial personality disorder and intermittent explosive disorder.

Sheak and three other White Bear Lake officers were at Holmgren’s apartment complex in the 3100 block of Karth Road to arrest him on a warrant in an open 2021 case charging him with assaulting his mother and threatening to shoot an officer.

Holmgren was in his bedroom with the door closed and refused to come out. He yelled loudly at the officers, told them he was “ready to die” and then fired a gun multiple times through the door, striking Sheak, charges allege.

“Due to the quick and heroic actions of Officer Sheak and his partners, he was quickly extracted from the scene and transported to the hospital,” Swanson said Friday.

Officers returned fire and retreated from the apartment, where Holmgren remained over the next several hours. He surrendered after tear gas was sent into his apartment. He was not injured.

The arrest warrant was issued Jan. 18 after Holmgren missed a Ramsey County court hearing on the 2021 charges. According to the criminal complaint in that case, Holmgren threatened to kill his mother, shoot a White Bear Lake officer and assault the officer’s family.

Holmgren was convicted in Ramsey County of misdemeanor domestic assault for threatening to kill his mother and her boyfriend in April 2020, according to court records. He was sentenced to serve two years of probation on March 3, 2021, but was discharged from the supervision on Oct. 26 of that year.

Holmgren’s next appearance on the latest charges is scheduled for March 15.
